Group Therapy
How We Help
There's a particular kind of relief that comes from sitting in a room with people who genuinely understand what you're going through. That's the power of group therapy, and it's why it remains one of the most researched and effective forms of treatment we provide here at Prime Therapy Services.
Prime is a Leader in Group Therapy
Group Therapy is a form of counseling guided by a trained therapist, built around a specific focus — whether that's building skills for anxiety and depression, supporting recovery, processing grief, or working through relationship dynamics.
While our groups primarily focus on DBT skill building, we also offer group therapy specifically for parents, grief, addiction, neurodivergence, and the LGBTQ+ community.

The Groups We Offer at Prime
Prime Therapy Services offers outpatient Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Groups for various ages and populations.
Our groups are a safe space to interact with others, receive feedback from multiple perspectives, and practice new interpersonal skills to use in everyday social situations – in relationships, at work, home, and everywhere in between.
Our licensed clinicians are trained in group facilitation and lead each session. They guide the flow of conversation and ensuring groups remain safe, cohesive, and inclusive for all members. Each group practices skills at different levels and in different ways based on their age, to best match where they are in their life journey.
You’re welcome to join at any time, and you don't have to be a client at Prime Therapy to join any of our groups.

Physical Space Matters for Group Work
Group work here at Prime is built on the belief that meaningful change and growth most often happens in a welcoming environment where people learn and practice in the presence of others who understand what they’re going through.
Group therapy asks something of you that individual therapy doesn't – it asks you to interact with other people, sometimes while sharing something personal with one another.
We fully understand that starting group can be overwhelming, and sometimes it can feel like group therapy is just not for you.
We’ve designed our group space with this in mind – comfortable seating that allows everyone to be seen and have personal space, sound-insulated walls for privacy, natural lighting, and warm tea or coffee available. Group members often tell us that our physical environment has helped them feel safe, allowing them to open up more comfortably than they had expected.
Telehealth Group Options
All groups at Prime Therapy Services are available in-person at our Bedminster, NJ office or virtually via Telehealth throughout New Jersey. Telehealth is a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform with the same structured facilitation and confidentiality standards as our in-person sessions.
This virtual option allows group members to have the flexibility to join sessions remotely and the reassurance that they can still participate even when they cannot physically attend.
We understand that life happens – it is your choice which format works with your schedule and comfort level each week.

What to Expect Before Joining a Group
Before joining group, we require a one-time initial assessment with one of our licensed group therapy facilitators.
During this 50-minute individual session, we will discuss your goals and determine which group is the right fit for you.
We also want to give you a chance to meet our team, get a natural feel for what we do here at Prime, and how we can help you.
After this session, we will determine the best starting time for you to officially join group, which can sometimes even happen on the same day.
Weekly DBT Groups
Prime Therapy's Outpatient DBT Social Skills Groups for Teens (ages 14-18), Young Adults (ages 18-24), and Adults (ages 25+) each meet once a week in-person at our Bedminster, NJ office or virtually via Telehealth. We offer open admissions, so you’re welcome to join any of our groups at any time. You don’t have to be in individual therapy or be a client of Prime’s to join any of our groups.

The DBT Skills Workbook
by Prime Therapy
These groups provide a safe space to connect with others navigating similar challenges while learning practical skills you can actually use in your daily life.
You’ll build skills across the 4 DBT Modules – Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
Along the way, we will focus on finding balance (walking the middle path) and increasing self-awareness, so you’re not just reacting – you’re responding with intention.
Every group member will receive Prime’s newly updated DBT Skills Training Binder, filled with informational guides and worksheets. You’ll bring this binder to group each week, and it's yours to keep as a helpful resource to use both in & out of group sessions.
Typically, you’ll meet with the same group of people each week to help make the group experience comfortable and effective for everybody. Our groups are tailored by age and experience level, so you’ll be placed
in a group with peers who are in a similar stage of life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is group therapy less effective than individual therapy?
Both are effective — Research shows group therapy can actually be more effective in treating depression, anxiety, and grief, especially for teens.
Will I have to share personal details in front of everyone right away?
You share at your own pace — Most members find that comfort builds naturally over the first few sessions as trust develops within the group.
Can I do group therapy alongside individual therapy?
Yes — Many clients at Prime join group therapy in addition to individual therapy, while some choose only group therapy. The choice is yours.
Do I have to do individual therapy at Prime to join group here?
No – Many group members often work with therapists outside of Prime. With your consent, your individual therapist and group facilitator can collaborate to support your overall treatment goals.
Are virtual groups as effective as in-person groups?
Both formats can be effective – Virtual groups can be effective, particularly for skills-based learning like DBT. However, attending in-person can also be effective for those who prefer added connection and interaction. It is your choice to join our groups virtually or in-person.
