LGBTQIA+ Community
Who We Help
If you're looking for a therapist who respects your lived experience, affirms your identity, and is committed to help you build a life that feels authentic and grounded, Prime Therapy is here for you.
Prime Therapy is a judgment-free space to work through identity exploration, family and relationship dynamics, invalidation, anxiety, and depression – all supported by clinicians with years of training in LGBTQ+ affirming care.
Our trauma-informed approach ensures physical and emotional safety to support each client’s choice, control, and involvement in the therapeutic process.
That's the short version. Here's what this means, who it’s for, and what it looks like in practice.

What Does "LGBTQ+ Affirming-Therapy" Mean at Prime?
It means working with a therapist who uses your preferred name and pronouns, understands the language and experiences that are relevant to your community, and recognizes that many of the challenges LGBTQ+ clients bring to therapy stem from how the world responds to their identity – not from the identity itself.
At Prime, affirming therapy is the way we build safety, trust, and understanding with every member of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s about creating a space where you feel comfortable and can trust that you will be supported without hesitation. This shapes our entire therapeutic approach: how we listen, how we collaborate, and how we show up in every session.
Who is LGBTQ+ Therapy For?
We work with all individuals across the LGBTQ+ community – gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, queer, asexual, questioning, and beyond. This includes teens, adults, people in transition, those who openly identify as LGBTQ+, and those still discovering who they are.
Members of this community come to Prime seeking affirmation, emotional safety, and a place to talk openly with a therapist who truly gets it.
You don’t need to have everything all figured out to start. Our team of licensed clinicians will meet you exactly where you are and will provide the kind of affirming, trauma-informed care that makes healing and progress possible.
Prime Therapy Leads LGBTQ+ Therapy in NJ

In addition to 1-on-1 sessions, we also run Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Groups for Teens, Young Adults, and Adults – available in-person at our Bedminster, NJ office and virtually via Telehealth throughout New Jersey.
These groups provide a sense of community and connection, giving the LGBTQ+ community a safe space to learn alongside others who share similar lived experiences. Our clinicians teach skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness to help you feel more regulated, understood, and confident in expressing who you are.
You are welcome to join at any time, and you don’t need to be a client at Prime Therapy to join any of our DBT Groups.
What Brings LGBTQ+ Clients to Therapy?
LGBTQ+ clients often come to Prime Therapy in search of an affirming therapist for the same reasons anyone does – anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or major life transitions – but often with added layers shaped by their unique lived experiences.
The LGBTQ+ community come with specific concerns shaped by their lived experience: navigating the coming-out process, processing rejection or strained relationships, or managing the chronic stress of navigating a world that isn't always welcoming or safe (a.k.a. minority stress).
Some clients come to work through internalized shame from invalidating environments or to build coping strategies around gender dysphoria. Others come to rebuild their sense of self after years of hiding, masking, or shrinking parts of who they are. And, for many, it’s a mix of general life stress and identity-related challenges that bring them to Prime Therapy.
How We Actually Approach This Work
Our clinicians draw upon the same evidence-based approaches we use across the practice and tailor them to each individual’s unique identity and experience – CBT for internalized shame or self-critical thought patterns, DBT for regulation and self-advocacy skills, and Attachment-Based Therapy for relational wounds and acceptance.
This approach can involve exploring how internalized messages from an invalidating upbringing or past relationship shape your thought patterns today. Or, it may involve building distress tolerance skills for navigating invalidation – whether it comes from unsupportive family or loved ones, judgmental co-workers, or simply from the weight of being misunderstood.
For clients navigating gender-affirming decisions, our role as therapeutic support is to help you process the emotional and relational aspects of these decisions and collaborate with medical providers when appropriate. Please be aware that we don't prescribe hormones or provide medical transition care directly.
What Sessions Actually Feel Like
Individual Sessions for the LGBTQ+ community are a private, safe space to feel heard and understood. Each session is grounded in compassion and affirmation, so you can speak openly without having to filter or explain yourself. You won’t have to brace for judgement or wonder whether your therapist “gets it”.
Together, you and your therapist will build skills for navigating moments of invalidation or misgendering, tolerating distress in environments that don’t always feel safe, and communicating clearly in relationships where boundaries and authenticity matter.
Sessions at Prime Therapy will feel like a place where you can process openly, explore identity safely, and build confidence in living a life that feels authentic. You set the pace of each session, whether you want to talk through what’s on your mind, if you want to focus on learning specific skills, or both.
Where Sessions Happen
Individual Sessions and Weekly DBT Groups (ages 14+) are available in-person at our Bedminster, NJ office or virtually via Telehealth throughout New Jersey. This virtual option allows the LGBTQ+ community added privacy and the flexibility to schedule around busy schedules.
It is your choice to decide whether meeting with your therapist in-person or virtually feels right for you.
What The First Session Will Look Like

The first session at Prime Therapy focuses on getting to know you – your history, what’s going on, and what brings you to therapy. You and your therapist will review parts of the therapeutic process like confidentiality, your goals, what feels most important to focus on together, and the kind of supports that can genuinely help you.
You’re invited to share at your own pace – there is no pressure to disclose anything before you are ready. By the end of the first session, you will have a clear sense of what ongoing therapy sessions will look like and how you and your therapist will work together.
You deserve a therapist who gets it, not one who's learning on the job
It's very common for the LGBTQ+ community to have experience working with therapists who weren’t prepared or trained to support their needs, and this can feel tiring and discouraging.
Prime Therapy is a safe space where you can trust your therapist and bring your whole self from the very first session – without having to anticipate misunderstandings or needing to educate them along the way.
We pay close attention to the resilience and insight you already carry. Many LGBTQ+ clients have developed powerful coping strategies, community connections, and self‑awareness that become essential parts of the therapeutic process. Our approach honors those strengths while helping build new skills, challenge old narratives, and create space for authenticity, safety, and growth.
